Marilyn Newkirk Books

Marilyn Magney Newkirk was born and raised in Spokane Washington. She attended Roosevelt Grade School, Northwest Christian School and graduated from Lewis and Clark high School and Whitworth University.

As a child growing up she enjoyed history, especially history of the Pacific Northwest. She loved to read but at times she found that reading and writing were difficult for her. Marilyn says the desire to learn helped her conquer what today is a very common occurrence, dyslexia. This learning problem was unknown when Marilyn was attending both the public and private school system. Even though she faced and up-hill battle with reading and writing, her curiosity to learn kept moving her forward. Looking back on her life and career she now believes that reading and writing provided her with a good mental stimulus. Marilyn says her mind was always full of story ideas, and now that she is retired she has the time to write and research.

Marilyn is retired from a career as a nursing home administrator, and Vice President of Operations for non-for profit corporations that owned Continuing Care Retirement Communities.

Marilyn has written two books since her retirement. Her first book was SPOKANE, 22ND STREET AND THE FIFTIES. Her second book and newest is THE LEGACY OF YESTERYEAR. Currently she is writing a children’s book.

Marilyn wrote her first book because she believes the era of the 50s was the greatest time for growth, prosperty, new technology and was the era for the onset of "rock n' roll" in America. The reason she wrote her second book, THE LEGACY OF YESTERYEAR was to acquaint the reader with the early history of eastern Washington along with the adversity and dangers our ancestors endured in order to survive during the 1800s and the early 1900s.

Marilyn and her husband Ray live in a small farming community in western Washington. They enjoy traveling to visit with their eight kids and eleven grandchildren.
